Cast of Characters
Ali and Hamid: The two brothers who help Kamila (âRoyaâ) grow her business by being steady customers. They are kind, honest, and hardworking, and become an indispensable outlet for Kamilaâs sewing groupâs clothing. Because of the chadri Kamila wore, Ali and Hamid never saw Kamila during the time she worked with them. It was not until years later that Hamid and Kamila met by accident. She recognized him and introduced herself.
Mahbooba and Hafiza: Two UN Habitat workers who recruit Kamila for the UNâs Womenâs Community Forum. Hafiza, who trained as a scientist, and the no-nonsense Mahbooba, heard about Kamila though her cousin, Rukhsana.
Mahnaz: One of Kamilaâs first students, Mahnazâs dreams of becoming an educator are on hold during the Talibanâs five-and-a-half year ban on education for girls. After resuming her education, she went on to become a professor at a Kabul university. Her sister, who also sewed with Kamila, went on to become a doctor.
Dr. Maryam: A dedicated physician, Dr. Maryam treats Kabulâs women in an office she rents from the Sidiqis. She is brave and fairly outspoken about her frustration with the Taliban. Eventually, she strikes a deal of sorts with the Taliban: she will treat only women, and the Taliban will leave her practice alone. As doctors flee Afghanistan and hospitals lose funding, Dr. Maryam is often the only medical professional women in Kamilaâs neighborhood can turn to. After the fall of the Taliban, she moved with her family to Helmand province in southern Afghanistanâa Taliban stronghold. Surprisingly, the Taliban welcomed her, and even sent their wives and daughters to her to be treated.
Mr. Sidiqi: The patriarch of the Sidiqi family, Mr. Sidiqi is a former Afghan military officer. He served the Afghanistan government during the tumultuous years before the Taliban took over. He is intelligent, educated, and well traveled, and he believes strongly in the importance of education for all people, including women. After the fall of the Taliban, he continues to live in the north in Parwan with his wife and is proud of their successful and ambitious children.
Mrs. Sidiqi: The matriarch of the Sidiqi family, Mrs. Sidiqi raised eleven children. Although not an obviously powerful figure, she is reflected in her childrenâs independence, resilience, and loyalty. Like her husband, Mrs. Sidiqi believes her children are capable of great things. She lives in Parwan with her husband.
Kamila Sidiqi: Kamila is the young woman at the center of this book. As of 2017, she is the deputy chief of staff for administration and finance at the presidentâs office in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan government. Now, married with a son, Kamila was just 19 years old when the Taliban forced her and every other teenage girl and woman in Kabul to remain in their homes unless accompanied by a male chaperone. She is smart, positive, driven, kind, and dedicated to helping her country and its citizens prosper, especially the women.
Laila Sidiqi: 15 years old when the Taliban invaded Kabul, she is of the younger Sidiqi sisters.
